MICHAEL PETERSON

Michael's wood sculptures are inspired by the geographic environment of the American Pacific Northwest. The selection and sourcing of wood is a significant step in his process of making. Every few months, Michael and his wife Jean make the 500-mile journey from their home on Lopez Island to Southern Oregon to find the perfect pieces of burl wood. Michael's work is found in numerous private and public collections throughout the U.S. and England.

“My work evolves out of the process of making and develops its own logic. There are few absolutes. As a Northwest wood sculptor, my approach to surface and organic form has always been grounded in the natural world and is aimed at evoking a sense of naturalness.”
